Module 03

Customer Needs Analysis

Ask the right question and you make the right sale.

01 / Programme

Programme overview.

Builds deep questioning, active listening and the ability to uncover the real motivation behind a stated need during the discovery meeting — the most decisive stage of the sale. Brings SPIN and consultative selling into the field.

02 / Context

Why this training?

Most lost deals are lost not to a 'bad pitch' but to 'incomplete discovery'. The salesperson hears what the customer says, not what they mean. This programme turns the first 20 minutes of a meeting from telling into understanding — because the moment customers state the real cost of their problem in their own words, the solution automatically becomes valuable.

03 / Key concepts

The backbone of the programme.

01

The SPIN Approach

Situation → Problem → Implication → Need-Payoff. Asked in this order, customers define their own need themselves.

02

Stated Need vs. Real Motivation

Behind 'I need a price' there is usually the motivation 'a number I can defend to management'. Telling the two apart is the heart of selling.

03

Active Listening and Confirmation

The 3F formula: Feel — Felt — Found. Acknowledge the customer's emotion, validate a comparable situation, then present the solution.

04

The Power of Silence

The discipline of staying silent for 4-6 seconds after asking a question. It doesn't triple the response rate — it triples the depth of the answer.

04 / From the field

Field example.

An industrial equipment salesperson heard 'we need a cheaper machine' and prepared an offer with an 8% discount. Re-running the meeting with a SPIN structure revealed the real issue was not machine price but the production loss caused by 4 hours of downtime per week. Result: instead of an 8% discount, a higher-segment machine was sold at full price, and the customer avoided CHF 60,000 in annual production losses.
